MFA|EDA at 2016 Sundance + Slamdance Film Festivals

Congratulations to Laura Doggett (MFA|EDA ’13) and Michaela O’Brien (MFA|EDA ’16), who have each received recent and exciting film festival news:

Another Kind of Girl, directed by Khaldiya Jibawi and produced by Laura Doggett will be screening at the Sundance Film Festival, January 21-31, 2016.  See Sundance’s Short Films press release here. This is the latest in a series of screenings and awards for films produced by Doggett (a 2015-26  CDS Lewis Hine Documentary Fellow) as part of her work leading a media workshop for Syrian girls in Jordan’s Za’atari Refugee Camp. Film festival appearances for films from this project include:  Calgary International Film Festival’s Youth Cinema Competition, Tallgrass Film Festival, 29th Leeds International Film Festival’s Parallel Worlds Program, Cucalorus Film Festival, the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, and Jibawi recently won the A38 Award at Kasseler Dok Fest.

In Crystal Skin, directed by Michaela O’Brien, has been selected to screen at the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival, January 22-28, where it will have its world premiere. In O’Brien’s film, conflict arises between mother and daughter when a young girl with a rare disease in Bogotá, Colombia refuses to attend school. See Slamdance’s press release here.

Congratulations also to Deborah Stratman, the frequent MFA|EDA Visiting Artist will be returning to Sundance with the world premiere of The Illinois Parables. As part of the festival’s 10th Anniversary of the New Frontier program, Stratman’s film is comprised of a “suite of Midwestern parables about faith, force, technology, and exodus questions the role belief plays in national identity,” and includes MFA|EDA family-and-friend David Gatten.

Congratulations all!
