Power Plant Gallery Summer Artist Residency

The Power Plant Gallery is pleased to offer three separate, one-month public studio residencies: June, July and August, 2016 with full use of our 1500-square-foot gallery. Residencies are available to an individual artist or group. Each residency lasts four weeks and comes with a $500 stipend (paid at the end of the residency). Because the gallery cannot offer housing support, local candidates are encouraged to apply.
As a laboratory for the arts, the Power Plant Gallery promotes creative work, while engaging with audiences through the transformative power of the arts. For this reason the gallery will hold open hours Thursdays through Saturdays from 11am-6pm during the summer residency, fostering public interest in the art-making process, not just the final product.
Artists-in-residence will be encouraged to engage with the public, exploring the full relationship between artist and audience, but will have full access to the gallery during the rest of the week.
While not required, artists with a project or work already underway, who would benefit from the gallery space to significantly advance or complete their project, will be prioritized. This residency is open to artists in all mediums, and at all stages of their career, including students. Artists working with hazardous materials cannot be considered, due to our location, and out of respect for our neighbors.
Artist-in-Residence will be expected to:
- Be present in the gallery Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during our public hours (min 21 hours/week), and Third Friday Durham (June 17, July 15, or August 19)
- Organize, with the assistance of the gallery director, at least one public event/performance/lecture/artist talk or other engagement during Third Friday Durham.
- Advance their work during their four-week stay.
To apply please submit the following:
- A one-page project statement that describes the project you will undertake during your residency, how you plan to activate the space and any audience engagement ideas.
- Please indicate which month: June, July, or August you prefer, if any. We cannot guarantee the month you choose, however.
- No more than ten jpeg images, or no more than 5 minutes of video of work created in the last two years. Links to online video are also accepted.
- A title list that corresponds to the jpeg images, with dimensions, media, date completed, and any caption information.
- Brief artist bio. If a group, please provide a bio for each artist.
- CV, if a group please provide for each artist.
How to apply:
- Title all the materials above with LastName_FirstName (eg, Smith_Susan_projectstatement),
- Jpeg images should be no more than 2mb each
- Video should be no more than 1gb
- Upload files to: #PPGArtists Summer Residency (a Dropbox account is not needed.)
Tips:
- Visit the gallery, if you have not seen the space before.
- In your project statement you should address the project you wish you undertake, how you plan to activate the gallery space during your tenure, and how access to the gallery will help advance your work.
- Ideas on audience engagement are welcomed, but not necessary. The gallery director will help you plan and execute.
- Send well lit and produced photographs and/or video of your project. This helps the committee ‘see’ your work. It is recommended you include detail images of larger works.
